The Buck Moon: July's Full Moon of Unexpected Expansion

In July, the year's momentum becomes visible. The fields are tall, the evenings are long, and in the old naming of the moons, this is the month of the Buck Moon, when male deer carry antlers in full, astonishing growth. Velvet-covered and warm to the touch, antlers are among the fastest growing tissue in the animal world, and for centuries people have looked up at July's full moon and seen exactly that: strength arriving quickly, and from somewhere unseen.
Why July's moon belongs to the buck
The moon names we still use were drawn from the land. January howled, June ripened, and July grew antlers. What makes the buck's growth remarkable is that it happens every single year. The antlers are shed each winter, and each summer they return, larger than before. Nothing about last year's loss prevents this year's growth. If the Buck Moon carries one quiet lesson, it is that: what fell away in a harder season is not the end of the story. Growth comes back, and it comes back fast.
July's moon has carried other names too. Some traditions call it the Thunder Moon, for the storms that roll through these long afternoons, and others the Hay Moon, for the first cutting of the fields, gathered and stored against the winter to come. Held together, the names tell one story: this is the season of visible strength and first harvest, when the year shows you what it has been building and asks what you intend to keep.
Unexpected expansion
At Ohm Dome, we hold the Buck Moon with the intention of unexpected expansion. Antlers do not push through gently or on a schedule we would choose. They arrive with force, in their own timing, and they change the shape of the animal that carries them. Our own growth often works the same way. The new chapter rarely announces itself politely. It presses through where we least expect it, and our work is not to force it but to stop bracing against it.
This is where sound earns its place. Deep, resonant vibration has a way of loosening rigid thinking, the tight grip of how things are supposed to go. When the mind softens, there is suddenly room for what has been trying to grow all along.
A candlelit night at the farm
On Tuesday, July 28, from 7:30 to 9:30 in the evening, we gather beneath the Buck Moon for a candlelit full moon sound bath in the loft of the renovated dairy barn at Hope Flower Farm and Winery in Waterford. You will settle onto your mat beneath the cathedral ceilings, set an intention with a stone chosen for the evening, and let waves of crystal bowls, gongs, and chimes move through the candlelit room while the moon climbs outside. The evening closes with journaling, an oracle card to carry home, and a little time in community before you drift back into the summer night.
Practices for the Buck Moon
Make room. On the night of the full moon, or any evening near it, sit quietly and bring to mind one place in your life where something new is pressing to come through: a project, a conversation, a version of yourself. Notice where you have been bracing against it, and on a slow exhale, soften that one place. Then say, plainly and once: I have room for this. That is the whole practice. Expansion does not need your effort. It needs your permission.
A midsummer inventory. The Buck Moon sits at the year's height, a natural moment to look back at how far you have come since winter. In a journal, name three strengths that carried you here, the way the hay is cut and stored in this same season. Then choose one of them to tend deliberately through the months ahead. Strength you have named is strength you can return to.
Thunder moon water. July's moon is also the Thunder Moon, and an old practice honors its storms: set a small jar of water, rainwater if a storm offers it, somewhere the moonlight can find it overnight. In the morning, use it to water something growing in your home or garden. It is a one-minute ritual of tending, a reminder that growth is mostly quiet care repeated.
Join us beneath it
The Buck Moon rises once a year, and we would be honored to meet it with you. You can reserve your space for the Buck Moon Sound Bath on July 28, or browse all of our upcoming gatherings to see what the season holds. Come as you are, and leave a little more room for what is growing in you.
