The Sacred Hinge of the Year: Embracing the Magic of Samhain

October and November

As October wanes and the air grows crisp, we arrive at Samhain. This marks the sacred point on the Wheel of the Year where the cycle both concludes and begins anew. Ancient Celtic traditions viewed this moment as the true new year, a reckoning that holds deep and quiet wisdom. Every new life must start in the dark soil before reaching for the sun. Samhain is the seed resting in the earth, gathering strength in the shadows.

The Final Harvest

The Wheel turns through three distinct harvests. We gather the early grain at Lammas (August) and the heavy fruit at the Autumn Equinox (September). Samhain represents the third and final harvest. We collect the deep roots and prepare our stores for the frost. The earth goes to sleep, and whatever remains in the fields is surrendered back to the land.

During this season, we shift our focus from outward abundance to inward preservation. We ask ourselves what essential truths and inner provisions we will carry through the long winter nights.

The Thinning Veil

We have always kept Samhain as a night of thresholds. The ancient customs of lighting carved lanterns and leaving offerings at the door stem from a shared knowing that the boundary separating our waking world from the spirit realm grows thin.

This creates a sacred opening for remembrance. We honor the ancestors and those who have crossed over by setting a place at the table. We speak their names aloud with deep reverence, inviting their enduring wisdom and memory to sit with us for the evening.

Three Ways to Honor Samhain at Home

  • Ignite the Dark: Light a single candle after dusk. Allow it to burn safely while you share a meal, holding quiet space for the shifting of the season. No formal ritual or spoken words are required.

  • Name the Endings: Write down the cycles that have naturally concluded for you this year. Acknowledge what has truly finished, allowing the year to feel fully complete so you can step cleanly into the new cycle.

  • Create an Altar Offering: Place a seasonal offering on your windowsill. A fallen apple, a cherished photograph, or the final blooming flower from your garden can sit in quiet vigil until the light returns.

The Moonlit Mavens Samhain Circle

The Magical Cottage in Hamilton, Virginia, lit at dusk with a path leading to the front door.

We will gather for our Moonlit Mavens Samhain circle on the evening of Thursday, October 29 at The Magical Cottage in Hamilton, Virginia. This women's circle offers ritual, soundscapes, and space to simply sit together at the hinge of the year.

For our sacred craft, we will be working with full-sized witch's brooms, adorning them with seasonal botanicals and beautiful crystals to sweep away stagnant energy and welcome the new year.

Bring a cozy blanket, a comfortable seat, and the names of any loved ones you wish to honor. Our circles remain intentionally small to foster a deep sense of connection among kindred spirits. If the Wheel of the Year is new to you, Moonlit Mavens and the Wheel of the Year walks through all eight festivals. Come to the circle either way. There is no wrong way to arrive.

We are deeply honored to hold this transitional space for you, whether you join us at the cottage or light your candle in the quiet of your own home.
