What to Expect at Your First Sound Bath
If you have been circling the idea for a while and have not booked yet, this is for you. A first sound bath is a strange thing to picture from the outside, and most of what holds people back is not doubt about whether it works. It is not knowing what the room will actually be like.
You lie down, and that is most of it
There is no sequence to learn and nothing to keep up with. You arrive, you find a spot on the floor, you settle, and you stay there. The sound is played around you for the length of the session. Nobody is watching you, nobody will correct you, and there is no posture to hold.
The word bath is doing real work in the name. You are not doing the practice so much as lying in it.
Arriving
Come ten minutes early if you can. That is not a rule, it just means you are not choosing a spot and unrolling a mat while everyone else has already gone quiet. People tend to arrive talking and then the room settles on its own, without anyone announcing it. At Ohm Dome, there is a wide-open invitation to not stress, even if you run late. We are just glad you made it. Showing up early is best, but if life happens, just enter in quietly, take your time and try not to disturb those around you, but please, visit the ritual table, settle in, and sink into wherever we are in the moment. There is no rush. That is why you are here.
Most gatherings at the farm are held in the loft of the renovated dairy barn. It is a wooden room with good height to it, which is part of why the sound behaves the way it does. You can put yourself anywhere in it. Near a wall is a common choice for a first time, and there is nothing wrong with that.
How long it lasts
The overall sessions last 1.5 - 2 hours. From beginning to end, the first few minutes involve settling into your space, visiting the ritual table, and lying down to find your optimal comfort. Expect around an hour, give or take, of immersive sound medicine (some longer depending on the session), followed by coming back into your body and an optional community share circle.
What to bring
Preparation for the sound bath is just as important as the sound bath. Having a dedicated bag to hold your sound bath items is found to be helpful! We recommend a yoga mat or cushioned mat to lie on. Lawn Chair mats are ideal too if you are looking for more cushion. Ohm Dome has some yoga mats, baja blankets and zero gravity chairs available until we run out. Reserve them at checkout at no additional charge. A blanket, which matters more than people expect, because body temperature drops when you stop moving for an hour. A pillow, cushion, bolster or a folded towel for under your head, and another for under your knees if your lower back likes that.
Wear whatever you would be comfortable lying still in for an hour. Socks are a good idea. Check weather to prepare. On slightly colder days, protect your "tips"... Your nose, fingers, and toes. That is the whole list.
What if I fall asleep
You might, and it is fine. It happens at most gatherings and it happens to people who come regularly. Snoring happens too, but when this happens, you may receive a gentle nudge from a neighbor or myself to help pull you slightly above REM sleep. Floating in and out of consciousness is more than welcome.
The opposite worry is just as common. Some people lie there with a busy mind the whole time and leave convinced they failed at it. Many people find that the sound gives the thinking mind something to follow, so the loop quiets on its own without being told to. Either way, you are not being graded. You are building a beautiful practice to help calm you and find clarity. That is why it is called, "the work."
What it actually feels like
People describe it differently, and that is worth saying plainly rather than promising you a particular experience. Some feel the low tones physically, in the chest or the jaw. Some drift in and out. Some cry, without a clear reason, and that is common enough to not feel uncomfortable or embarrassing.
The instruments vary by gathering. A Wild Wisdom evening is drum led and rhythmic, a shamanic journey rather than a still one, while an Elemental gathering often leans more on bowls and gongs and sounds of nature.
If deep rest is what you are after, yoga nidra is the gentlest doorway of the lot, allowing you to receive calming frequencies and vibrations but receive more verbal guidance throughout the session. To say yoga nidra is easier or harder for newer guests is difficult. Some love the guidance while some first-timers have difficulty keeping up....That is the beauty of this practice though. It gets more and more powerful each time you do it. Full & New Moon sound baths are more celestial, romantically set sound baths with warm candlelight. It is the only sound bath set in the evening so figuring out the best time during the day to receive sound medicine is also a great self-discovery for yourself as well. The sun heals and the moon feels so work through this in your body to see which one may feel most powerful for you. Or try both/all at least once!
Coming in
The next Yoga Nidra gathering is Sunday, September 27 at 10:30 in the morning at Hope Flower Farm and Winery in Waterford. You can save your spot here.
Come as you are, and bring someone with you if that makes it easier.
If a different kind of evening suits you better, all the upcoming gatherings are listed together. Your presence matters more than your preparation.
